Pupil Premium

“The Pupil Premium Grant should be used to ensure disadvantaged pupils receive consistently excellent teaching”

Marc Rowland, Deputy Director of the Education Trust

The Pupil Premium Grant is funding provided to schools which is additional to main school funding. It is allocated according to the number of pupils on-roll who have been eligible for free school meals (FSM) within the last 6 years. Pupil Premium payments are also allocated to children of service families and pupils who are ‘Looked After’ (in care) or adopted.

It is for schools to decide how the Pupil Premium is spent, since they are best placed to assess what additional provision should be made for the individual pupils within their responsibility.

Schools are to be held accountable for how they have used the additional funding to support pupils from low-income families.  Please read our Pupil Premium Grant Action and Impact Plan  for information regarding how we use pupil premium funding.  In addition to this we produce an Annual Report detailing the impact of the funding.

At Burnham on Sea Infant School we have focused the use of Pupil Premium funding to diminish attainment differences  and ensure that all of our children make the best possible progress with their learning.

Who is eligible for Pupil Premium?

Pupil premium is allocated to pupils from low income families and the eligibility check is identical to the Free School Meals eligibility check. Qualifying benefits are as follows:

  • Child Tax Credit based on income below £16,190

  • Working Tax Credit 'run on' (this is the payment someone may receive for a further four weeks after they stop qualifying for Working Tax Credit)
  • Families who receive any level of Working Tax Credit are not entitled to free school meals.
